The Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP) today announced €888,000 to fund rebuilding after the cyclones that plagued Mozambique last year, bringing total support to €1.26 million.
“Today we sign, with the Post-Cyclone Reconstruction Office, another Financing Protocol, which will allow us to deliver further support, in the amount of €888,000, thus raising to €1.588 million the support provided by the CPLP during this humanitarian emergency,” a CPLP statement issued today in Lisbon details.
“The mobilization of this expressive support for Mozambique is also a clear expression of the strong ties of solidarity that bind the CPLP member states and citizens of our countries – who were, in fact, decisive in the creation of the CPLP and have underpinned the organisation throughout its 23 years of existence,” the text adds.
Following the destruction caused by Cyclone Idai’s passage through central and northern Mozambique in March 2019, CPLP structures met and created an emergency financial line in support of affected populations.
In the communiqué, the CPLP recalls the memorandum signed on April 8, a document “that establishes the conditions under which the support is implemented, that is, the specific line is created in the CPLP Special Fund, to which the contributions of Member States, Associated Observers and Advisory Observers [are channelled]”.
“Last June, we signed the first Financing Protocol, whereby we provided financial support of around €370,000 for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of infrastructure,” the statement notes.
CPLP Executive Secretary Francisco Ribeiro Telles is currently in Mozambique for the inauguration of Filipe Nyusi as President of the Republic.
