The Angolan foreign minister, Téte António, on Friday called for “an increase in economic and business partnerships” for better cooperation at the level of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP).
Téte António, who was speaking in Luanda at the opening of the 27th Ordinary Meeting of the Council of Ministers of the CPLP, an organisation which Angola currently chairs, noted that increasing partnerships “with reciprocal and balanced advantages,” leads to comprehensive and sustainable development of the markets of the member states, with positive effects on the quality of life of their respective peoples.
Over the last few months Angola has held meetings of joint cooperation committees with several countries, including Equatorial Guinea, Sao Tome and Principe and Brazil, to “foster economic growth, encourage dialogue and increasingly stimulate interaction between peoples,” he added.
The expectation, according to the minister, is that this model of cooperation “may contribute to the implementation of social and macroeconomic policies aimed at promoting greater equality of opportunities for women’s inclusion in society and increasing the intervention of young people in the CPLP community area.
Téte Antonio also defended “greater cooperation between states in the search for common solutions on the basis of the principle of multilateralism,” in the face of the challenges of terrorism, Covid-19 and climate change, among others.
“Angola remains engaged in the prevention, management and resolution of conflicts in Africa, seeking to contribute to peaceful solutions that promote mediation and political dialogue, fundamental bases for the development of a national agenda of democracy and the rule of law on the continent,” Téte António also noted, highlighting the “commitment” of the Angolan President, João Lourenço, in the resolution of conflicts.
The Friday meeting was attended, besides Angola, by the heads of diplomacy of Portugal, Brazil, Cabo Verde and Sao Tome, the minister for education and human development of Mozambique, heads of delegation of the Republics of Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea and Timor-Leste, the executive secretary of the CPLP and the ambassador of Namibia accredited to Angola, representing the Associate Observers of the CPLP.
Economic cooperation in the community was the central theme of the meeting, but the debate also included the war in Ukraine.
The ministers were also due to consider the report on activities for the implementation of the programme to support the integration of Equatorial Guinea (PAIGE) into the community, funded by the Special CPLP Fund, diplomatic sources told Lusa.
The 13th Conference of Heads of State and Government of the CPLP approved on 17 July, 2021, in Luanda, the creation of a new pillar of the community, economic cooperation, proposed by Angola, the country that at the time held the rotating presidency of the organisation.
But to accommodate this new objective of the CPLP it is necessary for member states to approve an amendment to the organisation’s statutes, a revision that may or may not be more comprehensive, diplomatic sources said.
