The Mozambican health authorities on Monday reported a further ten cases of the Covid-19 respiratory disease, bringing the total number of Covid-19 cases diagnosed in Mozambique to 151,302.
According to a Monday press release from the Ministry of Health, since the start of the pandemic 942,908 people have been tested for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 399 of them in the previous 24 hours.
389 of the tests gave negative results and ten people tested positive for the virus. Of these new cases, five were men and five were women. One was a child under the age of 15. Seven of the new cases (70 per cent) were from the northern province of Cabo Delgado, and the other three were from Maputo city. No positive cases were reported from any of the other eight provinces.
After two days without any fatalities, the Ministry reported one Covid-19 death. The victim was a 55 year old Mozambican woman who died in Maputo. This brings the total Covid-19 death toll in Mozambique to 1,931.
The positivity rate (the percentage of people tested found to be carrying the virus) on Monday was 2.5 per cent – much higher than the 0.5 per cent found on Sunday, or the 1.3 per cent on Saturday.
Over the same 24 hour period, two new Covid-19 patients were admitted to hospital, both in Maputo, and no patients were discharged.
The number of people under medical care in the Covid-19 treatment facilities rose from seven on Sunday to eight on Monday. Six of these patients were in Maputo, one in Zambezia and one in Nampula.
Only two people were declared fully recovered from Covid-19 on Monday, both in Sofala province. The total number of recoveries now stands at 149,211, or 97.9 per cent of all those ever diagnosed with Covid-19 in Mozambique.
The number of active cases of Covid-19 rose from 149 on Sunday to 156 on Monday. The geographical distribution of the active cases was as follows: Cabo Delgado, 63; Maputo city, 42; Niassa, 13; Manica, eight; Inhambane, eight; Nampula, six; Zambezia, six; Gaza, five; Maputo province, four; and Tete, one. Sofala was the only province with no active Covid-19 cases.
The Ministry release also reported that 88,864 people were vaccinated against Covid-19 in the previous 24 hours. 2,254,676 people are now fully vaccinated, and 3,662,747 have received at least one dose of the vaccine.
