The Portuguese embassy in Maputo has announced the scheduling of ten flights between Lisbon and the Mozambican capital, five each way, before the end of August, to address circumstances imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
“In conjunction with the Government of Mozambique, humanitarian flights will be carried out between Lisbon and Maputo, operated by TAP and with passenger transport in both directions,” the embassy says, adding that the flights are “coordinated by the Portuguese State”.
Flights from Lisbon to Maputo take place today, and on the 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th of August. Flights from Maputo to Lisbon take place on the 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th August.
The embassy points out that “in the case of humanitarian and return-support flights”, only passengers with the nationality of, or residence permit in, the destination country are allowed to travel (except in exceptional authorisations), which in the case of Portugal includes family members and European Union countries or countries in the Schengen Area.
Despite being designated humanitarian flights, tickets are sold by TAP, which provides additional information on the terms and conditions applicable to boarding.
“Since flights are coordinated by the Portuguese State, passengers do not need to directly request Ministry of Interior of Mozambique authorisation to enter or exit, the authorisation being requested for all passengers,” the embassy adds.
Anyone who has any difficulty making reservations on one of the flights from Maputo to Lisbon and has “a proven urgency [in this trip] for serious health reasons or for permanent departure from the country” should contact the Consulate General in Maputo or the Consulate General in Beira, it adds.
The embassy note states that “all passengers on flights from Lisbon to Maputo must perform a [Covid-19] test on arrival that will be made available by Mozambican health authorities”, and must wait for the results before proceeding to other destinations within the country.
A test carried out abroad, “even if the result is negative, may not dispense with the obligation [to take] the new test on arrival”. It is also mandatory “to comply with a home quarantine period of 14 days upon arrival in Mozambique”.
On the Maputo-Lisbon route “it is mandatory to present, at the time of boarding,” proof of a negative Covid-19 test taken no more than 72 hours before departure.
Otherwise, it will be necessary to take a test at the airport and comply with the rules associated with the procedure, with details on the Portuguese Directorate-General for Health website, (covid19.min-saude.pt).
