Sofala province has this year recorded a loss of 150 billion meticais (around US$203.1 million) in the export of fisheries products as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Of a planned annual total of 7,000 tons of fishery products, Sofala province exported only 3,000, due to restrictions imposed by the new coronavirus.
The head of the Department of the Sea, Inland Waters and Fisheries in Sofala provincial economic services, Carlos Sendela, said that many export destination countries had closed their borders because of the pandemic.
Sendela said that the sector has been urging companies to develop national markets while the current scenario remains the same.
Shrimp and crab are Sofala’s biggest seafood exports.
