The Mozambican health authorities announced on Saturday a further seven deaths from the Covid-19 respiratory disease, and 780 new cases.
According to a Health Ministry press release, the victims were all Mozambican men, aged between 47 and 87. All the deaths occurred in Maputo city health units. Six of the deaths were declared on Friday, and one on Saturday. This brings the total Covid-19 death toll in Mozambique to 297.
The release announced that, since the start of the pandemic, 321,960 people have been tested for the coronavirus that causes Covid.19, 2,791 of them in the previous 24 hours. Of the samples tested, 1,346 were from Maputo city, 376 from Maputo province, 234 from Cabo Delgado, 233 from Gaza, 190 from Tete, 153 in Zambezia, 102 in Inhambane, 100 in Manica, 53 in Nampula and 22 in Niassa. No tests were reported from Sofala.
2,011 of these tests gave negative results, and 780 people tested positive for the coronavirus. Thus almost 28 per cent of those tested were carrying the virus. Since the first case was detected, on 22 March last year, 31,628 cases of Covid-19 have been diagnosed in Mozambique,
748 of the new cases have been confirmed as Mozambican citizens, and the nationality of the other 32 has yet to be ascertained. 412 are men or boys and 368 are women or girls. 72 are children under the age of 15, and 30 are over 65 years old. For 35 cases, no age information was available.
The figures once again confirm that Maputo is the epicentre of the Mozambican epidemic. 379 of the cases were from Maputo city and 179 were from Maputo province. Thus Maputo city and province provided 71.5 per cent of the cases reported on Saturday. There were also 59 cases from Gaza, 54 from Tete, 43 from Inhambane, 33 from Manica, 28 from Zambezia, three from Nampula and two from Niassa.
The Ministry reported that, over the previous 24 hours, 21 Covid-19 patients had been discharged from hospital (20 in Maputo city, and one in Manica), but 28 new patients were admitted (27 in Maputo and one in Manica).
There are now 228 people under medical care in the Covid-19 isolation wards – 181 in Maputo (79.3 per cent of the total), ten in Nampula, nine in Matola, seven in Zambezia, seven in Tete, five in Gaza, three in Sofala, two in Cabo Delgado, two in Manica, and two in Inhambane. Niassa remains the only province where no Covid-19 patients are hospitalised.
In the same 24 period, another 144 people made a full recovery from Covid-19 – 87 in Zambezia and 57 in Inhambane. The total number of recoveries now stands at 20,002, which is 63.2 per cent of all those diagnosed in Mozambique with the coronavirus.
The number of active Covid-19 cases has risen to 11,325, the highest ever. Their distribution is as follows: Maputo city, 5,415 (47.8 per cent of the total); Maputo province, 1,876; Manica, 781; Gaza, 678; Sofala, 613; Inhambane, 486; Zambezia, 404; Niassa, 372; Nampula, 330; Cabo Delgado, 232; Tete, 138.
