The Mozambican health authorities announced on Saturday a further seven deaths from the Covid-19 respiratory disease, 87 hospitalisations and 597 new cases.
According to a press release from the Ministry of Health, the latest victims were all Mozambican men, whose ages varied between 49 and 75. Five of them died in Maputo city, and two in Maputo province. Two of the deaths were declared on Wednesday, and five on Friday.
This brings the total Covid-19 death toll in Mozambique to 363. 288 of the deaths (79.3 per cent) occurred in the capital.
The Ministry release said that, since the start of the pandemic, 341,004 people have been tested for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 2,077 of them in the previous 24 hours. Of the samples tested, 389 were from Niassa, 332 from Maputo city, 307 from Zambezia, 263 from Nampula, 200 from Gaza, 190 from Maputo province, 185 from Manica, 141 from Tete, 52 from Inhambane and 18 from Cabo Delgado. No tests were reported from Sofala.
1,480 of the tests gave negative results, and 597 people tested positive for the coronavirus, thus bringing the total number of cases diagnosed in Mozambique to 37,705.
At first sight, the number of cases reported on Saturday, is a significant decline on the 1,275 cases reported the previous day – the highest number ever recorded in a single 24 hour period. But in percentage terms, it is almost exactly the same: 27.9 per cent of those tested on Friday were positive for the coronavirus, and 28.7 per cent of those tested on Saturday.
575 of the new cases are known to be Mozambican, two are certainly foreigners, but their nationality was not announced. And in a further 20 cases their nationality has not yet been confirmed. 300 are men or boys, and 297 are women or girls. 52 are children under the age of 15, and 34 are over 65 years old. In 23 cases, no age information was available.
158 of the new cases were from Maputo city and 62 from Maputo province. Maputo city and province accounted for 36.8 per cent of the cases reported on Saturday. There were also 79 cases from Gaza, 63 from Manica, 61 from Niassa, 52 from Zambezia, 51 from Tete, 35 from Nampula, 27 from Inhambane, and nine from Cabo Delgado.
The release said that, in the same 24 hour period, 20 Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital (19 in Maputo and one in Tete), but 87 new patients were admitted (61 in Maputo, 13 in Matola, seven in Sofala, four in Tete, one in Zambezia and one in Cabo Delgado).
The number of people currently under medical care in the Covid wards is 320. The majority of these – 246 (77 per cent) – are in Maputo. There are also 17 in Matola, 16 in Zambezia, 16 in Sofala, nine in Zambezia, seven in Sofala, three in Manica, two in Cabo Delgado, two in Nampula and two in Inhambane.
The Ministry also reported that a further 436 people have made a complete recovery from Covid-19 (217 in Inhambane, 200 in Maputo city, and 19 in Zambezia). This brings the total number of recoveries to 23,945 – which is 63.5 per cent of all those diagnosed with the coronavírus in Mozambique.
The number of active Covid-19 cases is continuing to increase, and now stands at 13,393 (up from 13,239 the previous day). The geographical breakdown of the active cases is as follows: Maputo city, 6,953 (51.9 per cent of the total); Maputo province, 1,927; Manica, 747; Sofala, 730; Gaza, 714; Inhambane, 612; Niassa, 588; Zambezia, 493; Nampula, 282; Cabo Delgado, 179; Tete, 168.
