The mass roll-out across Mozambique of buckets with taps for hand washing has generated debate around the issue of whether the user, having washed his or her hands, might not become infected – or re-infected – with the Covid-19 virus when touching the tap to turn the water off.
This debate led Quelimane municipality and its partners to install in the city’s central market, its busiest location, a system in which the user does not need to touch anything, both water and liquid soap being dispensed by means of a foot pedal.
This way, the city council hopes it can better protect vendors, customers and other visitors from the coronavirus.
