President Filipe Nyusi on Friday criticised a perceived “lack of collective awareness” of the indispensability of Covid-19 prevention measures, warning that the number of infections and deaths continues to increase.
“It seems that there is no collective conscience, and that preventive measures are not being observed,” Filipe Nyusi said in a seemingly impromptu comment during his speech on Armed Forces Day.
Nyusi particularly cited video footage of bathers on the beaches disregarding social distancing and consuming alcohol in an unruly manner.
“[While] people don’t dive [into the water] wearing a mask, physical distancing is possible and necessary on the beach. People like to socialise, but we are only asking that life be respected,” he said.
The Mozambican president said that the impact of Covid-19 on the country was becoming serious, with an increase in infections and deaths, which could result in an overload of the national health system (SNS).
“We have many concerns to attend to [in the SNS] and [with the containment of Covid-19], we can save on medicines, provided that the measures recommended by the health authorities are observed”, said the Mozambican President.
