Portugal will bring forward the disbursing of €250,000 to the Mozambican government for the country’s education sector in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Portuguese embassy in Maputo has announced.
The protocol governing the transfer of resources was signed in a closed ceremony at the Ministry of Education and Human Development in Maputo.
Minister of Education and Human Development Carmelita Namashulua says that the €250,000 will leverage the sector at a time when the world is struggling with the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Portugal has decided to anticipate the disbursement of its contribution taking into account the current situation of prevention and response to Covid-19,” a diplomatic source said, and particularly to “guarantee the continuity of the academic year, with all the challenges inherent to the closure of schools decreed on March 23.”
The amount concerns the contribution to the Fund for Support to the Education Sector in Mozambique (FASE), of which Portugal has been a partner since 2007. Portugal formalised its support for FASE in May 2007 .
Mozambique had by Monday registered an accumulated total of 254 cases of Covid-19 infection, with two deaths and 97 patients said to be fully recovered.
