Mozambique: UN warns of "relentless cascade of emergencies"

The Mozambican health authorities announced on Tuesday that a further 4,076 people made a full recovery from the Covid-19 respiratory disease in the previous 24 hours, almost five times the number of new cases diagnosed in the same period.
According to a Tuesday press release from the Ministry of Health, 1,914 of the recoveries were from Sofala, 755 from Gaza, 740 from Maputo province, 412 from Niassa, 184 from Zambezia, 65 from Cabo Delgado and six from Tete.
The total number of recoveries now stands at 193,145, which is 87.7 per cent of all those ever diagnosed with Covid-19 in Mozambique.
Since the start of the pandemic, 1,187,905 people have been tested for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 4,156 of them in the previous 24 hours. 3,305 of these tests yielded negative results, while 851 people tested positive for the virus. This brought the total number of Covid-19 cases diagnosed in Mozambique to 220,241.
Of the new cases identified on Tuesday, 480 were women and 371 were men. 118 were under the age of 15.
The provinces with the largest number of new cases were Maputo province (162 – 19 per cent) and Zambezia and Niassa (each with 108 – 12.7 per cent). There were also 87 cases from Inhambane, 77 from Maputo city, 71 from Manica, 54 from Gaza, 53 from Nampula, 50 from Sofala, 49 from Tete, and 32 from Cabo Delgado.
The positivity rate (the percentage of people tested who prove to be infected by the virus) fell from 27.3 per cent on Monday to 20.48 per cent on Tuesday.
Over the same 24 hour period, 21 Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital (11 in Maputo, four in Niassa, four in Manica, one in Nampula and one in Gaza), and 14 new cases were admitted (10 in Maputo, two in Gaza, one in Niassa and one in Manica).
The number of people under medical care in the Covid-19 treatment centres fell from 163 on Monday to 152 on Tuesday. 73 of these patients (48 per cent) were in Maputo. There were also 18 patents in Manica, 11 in Nampula, 10 in Niassa, nine in Inhambane, nine in Gaza, eight in Sofala, six in Matola, four in Zambezia, three in Tete and one in Cabo Delgado.
The Ministry release reported a further four deaths from Covid-19. They were two women and two men, aged between 49 and 94. Two of them died in Maputo and two in Manica. This brings the total Covid-19 death toll in Mozambique to 2,136.
The number of active cases of Covid-19 fell from 28,185 on Monday to 24,956 on Tuesday. The geographical distribution of the active cases was Maputo city, 6,843 (27.4 per cent of the total); Maputo province, 6,809; Manica, 2,320; Niassa, 1,614; Zambezia, 1,484; Inhambane, 1,392; Gaza, 1,315; Tete, 1,087; Cabo Delgado, 862; Nampula, 692; and Sofala, 538.
The Ministry also reported that, in the previous 24 hours, a further 107,883 people were vaccinated against Covid-19. This brings the number of people fully vaccinated to 8,514,319, while 10,381,672 have received at least one dose of the vaccine.
