The Mozambican health authorities on Sunday reported just two new cases of the Covid-19 respiratory disease, the lowest figure in February.
Both the new cases were Mozambican men from Tete province, and both were aged over 50 according to a Sunday press release from the Ministry of Health.
Since the start of the pandemic, 1,268,201 people have been tested in Mozambique for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 728 of them in the previous 24 hours. 726 of these tests gave negative results, and the two positive cases bring the total number of people diagnosed with Covid-19 in the country to 225,038.
The Covid-19 positivity rate (the percentage of those tested who prove to be carrying the coronavirus) fell from 1.26 per cent on Saturday to just 0.27 per cent on Sunday.
Over the same 24 hour period, no Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital, but three new cases were admitted, all in Tete.
The number of people under medical care in the Covid-19 treatment centres rose from 15 on Saturday to 18 on Sunday, three of whom were receiving supplementary oxygen. Half of these cases were in Maputo, and there were also four cases in Tete, two in Niassa, two in Manica and one in Gaza.
For the third consecutive day, the Ministry reported no deaths from Covid-19. Thus the death toll from Covid-19 in Mozambique remains 2,192.
On Sunday, just one person was declared to have recovered from Covid-19, in Zambezia. The total number of recoveries now stands at 219,321, which is 97.5 per cent of all those ever diagnosed with Covid-19 in Mozambique.
The number of active cases of Covid-19 was almost unchanged rising very slightly from 3,530 on Saturday to 3,521 on Sunday.
The geographical breakdown of the active caes was as follows: Maputo city, 3,262 (92.6 per cent of the total); Cabo Delgado, 74; Maputo province, 55; Gaza, 38; Tete, 31; Zambezia, 21; Nampula, 12; Niassa, 10; Manica, nine; Sofala, five; and Inhambane, four.
The Ministry also reported that, in the previous 24 hours, a further 9,770 people were vaccinated against Covid-19. The number of people fully vaccinated against the disease has now risen to over 11 million (11,002,789), which is 72.3 per cent of all citizens aged 18.
155,908 people have received booster shots. Anyone over 60 years of age, who received the initial Covid-19 vaccination at least six months previously, is eligible for a booster shot.
