UNICEF warns of "volatile and unpredictable" situation in northern Mozambique

The Mozambican health authorities on Friday announced a further nine deaths from the Covid-19 respiratory disease, and 696 new cases.
According to a Health Ministry press release, six of the latest victims are men and three are women. All are Mozambican citizens, and they vary in age from 26 to 83. Five of the deaths occurred in Maputo city, two in Matola and two in Tete.
Seven of the deaths were declared on Thursday, one on 28 January and one on 27 January. The total number of deaths from Covid-19 in Mozambique is now 436. 59 of these deaths were reported in the first six days of February. Maputo city accounts for 343 of the deaths (78.7 per cent).
Since the start of the pandemic, 358,591 people have been tested for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 2,274 of them in the previous 24 hours. Of the samples tested, 1,141were from Maputo city, 279 from Maputo province, 263 from Sofala, 207 from Manica, 163 from Nampula, 85 from Tete, 53 from Cabo Delgado, 36 from Inhambane, 29 from Zambezia, 17 from Gaza, and one from Niassa.
1,578 of the tests gave negative result, and 696 people tested positive for the coronavirus. This brings the total number of coronavirus infections diagnosed in Mozambique to 43,184. The positivity rate on Friday (positive results as a percentage of all tests) was 30.6 per cent. This compares with 40.4 per cent on Thursday, 35 per cent on Wednesday, and 30.3 per cent on Tuesday.
663 of the cases reported on Friday are known to be Mozambicans, 21 are foreigners (but the Ministry release did not give their nationalities) and the nationalities of the remaining 12 have yet to be confirmed. 375 are men or boys and 321 are women or girls. 38 are children under 15 years of age, and 46 are over 65 years old. For 17 cases, no age information was available.
As has become the norm, the majority of new cases are from the far south – 358 from Maputo city and 60 from Maputo province. Maputo city and province thus account for slightly more than 60 per cent of the cases reported on Friday. There were also 132 cases from Sofala, 42 from Cabo Delgado, 36 from Manica, 24 from Tete, 20 from Nampula, 11 from Inhambane, ten from Zambezia and three from Gaza. No new cases were reported from Niassa.
According to the Ministry release, over the same 24 hour period, 39 Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital (25 in Maputo, six in Manica, four in Tete, two in Sofala, one in Niassa and one in Cabo Delgado), but 55 new patients were admitted (36 in Maputo, seven in Matola, four in Manica, three in Zambezia, two in Sofala, two in Gaza, and one in Cabo Delgado).
As of Friday, 342 people were under medical care in the Covid-19 wards. The great majority of them, 255 (74,6 per cent), are in Maputo, There are also 23 in Matola, 17 in Sofala, 12 in Zambezia, 12 in Inhambane, ten in Tete, seven in Gaza, two in Cabo Delgado, two in Nampula, one in Niassa and one in Manica.
The Ministry also reported that on Friday 539 people made a full recovery from Covid-19 (237 in Manica, 160 in Niassa, 69 in Zambezia, 44 in Inhambane and 29 in Cabo Delgado). This brings the total number of recoveries to 26,212, which is 60.7 per cent of all those diagnosed in Mozambique with the coronavirus.
AS the number of recoveries continues to lag behind the number of new cases, the number of active Covid-19 cases is continuing to rise inexorably. There are now 16,532 active cases, distributed geographically as follows: Maputo city, 9.087 (55 per cent of the total); Maputo province, 2,311; Sofala, 1,180; Gaza, 1,126; Inhambane, 801; Niassa, 477; Manica, 439; Nampula, 337; Cabo Delgado, 320; Zambezia, 319; and Tete, 135.
