The Islamic Council of Mozambique in Nampula is concerned that some Muslims are holding religious services in defiance of the presidential decree guiding the fight against the spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus.
Council spokesman Abdul António expressed concern after a significant number of believers were arrested by the police for alleged infractions, including holding services without observing the preventative measures laid down by the authorities.
“It is unfortunate that, even now, we have some of our Muslim brothers claiming that information has not yet reached them, so justifying the holding of religious services in defiance of the state of emergency,” he said.
The spokesman again called on Muslims to comply fully with prevention measures, thereby both avoiding arrest and assuring their health and that of others.
