The Mozambican health authorities on Wednesday reported two further deaths from the Covid-19 respiratory disease, and 325 new cases.
According to a Ministry of Health press release, the latest victims were two Mozambican men aged 57 and 58. One died in Maputo and one in Sofala. One death was declared on Tuesday and one on Wednesday.
This brings the total Covid-19 death toll in Mozambique to 608. The great majority of these deaths – 482 (79.3 per cent) – occurred in Maputo.
Since the start of the pandemic, 410,066 people have been tested for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 1,566 of them in the previous 24 hours. Of the samples tested, 558 were from Maputo city, 414 from Maputo province, 279 from Sofala, 102 from Manica, 73 from Inhambane, 71 from Zambezia, and 59 from Niassa. But four provinces – Cabo Delgado, Nampula, Tete and Gaza – did not report any tests at all.
1,231 of the tests gave negative results, while 325 people tested positive for the coronavirus. This brings the total number of cases of Covid-19 diagnosed in Mozambique to 56,920. The Wednesday positivity rate (the proportion of people tested found to be carrying the virus) was 20.8 per cent. This is a reduction from the positivity rates of the past few days – 22.2 per cent on Tuesday, 22.1 per cent on Monday, and 23.1 per cent on Sunday. But the relatively small size of the Wednesday sample, with four provinces entirely missing, makes it impossible to draw any firm conclusions.
All the cases reported on Wednesday were Mozambican nationals. 173 were men or boys and 152 were women or girls. 19 were children under 15 years of age, and 21 were over 65 years old. No age information was available for eight cases.
Most of the new cases were from the far south – 105 from Maputo province and 90 from Maputo city. Thus Maputo city and province accounted for 60 per cent of the cases reported on Wednesday. There were also 69 cases from Sofala, 19 from Manica, 20 from Zambezia, 13 from Niassa, and nine from Inhambane.
In the same 24 hour period, 24 Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital (19 in Maputo, three in Cabo Delgado and two in Gaza), but 39 new cases were admitted (32 in Maputo, four in Cabo Delgado, two in Zambezia and one in Sofala).
As of Wednesday, there were 228 people under medical care in the Covid-19 wards (up from 215 on Tuesday). The great majority – 175 (76.7 per cent) – were in Maputo. There were also 15 patients in Zambezia, 11 in Matola, seven in Tete, six in Nampula, five in Sofala, four in Cabo Delgado, three in Inhambane, one in Manica and one in Gaza. Niassa remains the only province where no Covid-19 patients are hospitalised.
The Ministry release also reported that a further 300 people have made a full recovery from Covid-19 – 296 in Sofala and four in Zambezia. This brings the total number of recoveries to 37,870, which is 66.5 per cent of all those in Mozambique diagnosed with the coronavirus.
The number of Covid-19 active cases has now risen to 18,438 (up from 18,415 on Tuesday). These cases are distributed as follows: Maputo city, 11,650 (63.2 per cent of the total); Maputo province, 2,361; Sofala, 1,781; Cabo Delgado, 711; Inhambane, 562; Niassa, 364; Nampula, 240; Gaza, 212; Manica, 206; Tete, 205; and Zambezia, 146.
