Saudi Arabia sends lifesaving date shipment to feed 100,000 conflict-affected Mozambicans

Mozambique yesterday reported another Covid-19 death, bringing the total to 28, on a day when the number of infections rose to 4,647, the Ministry of Health (MISAU) announced.
The victim is a 61-year-old Mozambican man, who was admitted to the General Hospital of Chamanculo in Maputo on August 28 with a “severe respiratory illness”, having been transferred to the Machava General Hospital, the Ministry of Health pandemic update details.
The victim “remained in a serious general condition and was declared dead on the morning of the 8th”, the document adds.
Mozambique on Tuesday also reported 90 new cases of Covid-19, bringing the total to 4,647, of which 4,364 are locally transmitted and 283 are imported.
“All 90 new cases reported today are individuals of Mozambican nationality,” the statement says.
The newly diagnosed cases are from the provinces of Cabo Delgado, with 23 cases; Nampula and Manica with one case respectively; Zambézia, with 54; Tete, with two; Maputo province with three cases; and Maputo city with six.
Health authorities also reported 18 new recoveries, bringing to 2,715 (58%) the number of people who are reported to have recovered.
MISAU reports 22 patients as being hospitalised: one patient in the province of Nampula, two in the province of Tete and 19 in the city of Maputo.
There are currently 1,900 active cases of Covid-19 in Mozambique, distributed as follows: Maputo city with 1,090 patients, Maputo province with 202; Cabo Delgado with 191, Nampula province with 162, Niassa with 86, Zambézia with 58, Sofala with 48, Manica with 24, Tete with 15, Inhambane with 14 and Gaza with 10.
Since the announcement of the first infection on March 22, Mozambique has tested a total of 107,083 suspected cases and screened just over two million.
