Mozambique reported 13 more positive cases of Covid-19 on Thursday (June 17), bringing the total to 651, still with four deaths, director of Public Health Rosa Marlene said.
All newly diagnosed cases are of Mozambican nationality. One is from Cabo Delgado province, eight are from Nampula, three from Maputo province and one is from Maputo city.
These newly confirmed cases are from a batch of 751 samples collected through active surveillance and contact screening and tested from between Wednesday and Thursday.
Rosa Marlene says the thirteen patients have mild symptoms, and “are in isolation at home. At this moment, the process of mapping their contacts is underway”.
Marlene also revealed that eight citizens are currently receiving hospital care for Covid-19 in Mozambique, four in Nampula, three in the city of Maputo and one in Sofala province. Of those hospitalized in Nampula, one is in a critical, but stable, condition.

Regarding the possibility of hospitalising infected patients, the national director of Health Surveys and Monitoring at the National Institute of Health, Sérgio Chicumbe, said that health authorities were still evaluating hospitalisation criteria from the point of view of effectiveness, both medical and in terms of cost.
Of the total of 651 cases registered in the country, 588 are locally transmitted and 63 are imported, with four deaths also registered. The total number of recoveries stands at 169 .
The country had, by Thursday (June 17), 477 active cases, of which eight are hospitalised, one in serious condition and the rest “have mild to moderate symptoms”, in addition to “good clinical prognosis”, Rosa Marlene said.
Since the announcement of the first case of Covid-19 in Mozambique, on March 22, the country has tested 21,014 suspected cases and screened 1,032,498 people at various points of entry into the country.
18,676 people suspected of Covid-19 have been placed under home quarantine and 2,236 continue to be monitored by health authorities.
The province of Nampula leads with the largest number of active cases of Covid-19, with 204 cases, followed by Cabo Delgado with 103, and the city of Maputo with 59. The rest distributed among the other provinces.
Mozambique has been in a state of emergency since April 1st, twice extended until June 29th.
Various restrictions are in place. All schools are closed, as are entertainment and leisure facilities. All types of events and mass gatherings are prohibited, and the population is recommended to stay at home if they do not have essential matters to attend to.
