Health officials in Sofala province are investigating information that a truck driver from Malawi tested positive for Covid-19 soon after arriving from Beira, in central Mozambique, a region with so far no official record of the new coronavirus.
“The National Health Institute is already aware of this information and will advance further details as soon as possible,” secretary of state for Sofala province, Stella Pinto Novo Zeca, told a press conference in Beira, Sofala province, on Friday (May 8).
Malawi’s Health Minister Jappie Mhango said on Tuesday that a driver from his country was infected with the new coronavirus in Mozambique, classifying it as an imported case, but Stella Pinto Novo Zeca said it was premature to conclude that the patient had contracted the disease in Sofala.
“We cannot say [for sure] that he left Mozambique with Covid-19. Some of the information is contradictory,” she said.
The truck driver reportedly travelled to the port of Beira to pick up fuel, a product that Malawi imports through Mozambique.
Sofala province is among those that have no confirmed Covid-19 case among the total of 91 infections confirmed by authorities in Mozambique in Cabo Delgado and Maputo province and city.
Malawi had a total of 43 confirmed cases of the new coronavirus, with three fatalities, according to the Friday update from the CNBC Africa television channel.
With 91 cases and no fatalities by Monday (May 12) morning, Mozambique has been in a state of emergency since April 1st and until the end of this month, with spaces for entertainment and leisure closed, and a ban on all types of events and agglomerations, while all citizens are recommended to stay at home if they have no work or other essential reasons to deal with.
During the same period, there is a limited capacity for public transport with mandatory use of face masks, schools are closed and the issuance of entry visas is suspended.
