Mozambique had, up until November, spent 54% of the US$700 million requested from international partners in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, President Nyusi announced on Wednesday.
“This amount [US$379 million] was distributed for prevention, treatment, [to cover] losses [due to the economic slowdown] and transfers to families and micro-businesses,” President Nyusi said during questions on the state of nation in parliament.
Nyusi advocated transparency on the matter, pointing out that the figures are in fact published on the Ministry of Economy and Finance website.
The economic slowdown brought sleepless nights, he said, but “despite all the constraints, life in Mozambique has not stopped”.
The head of state announced for this Thursday an Address to the Nation, within the scope of the Covid-19 and in the context of the festive season, referring to that occasion any further details about the impact of the pandemic in Mozambique.
At the end of a three-hour speech in parliament yesterday, the Mozambican head of state said he thought the nation had “innovative and renewed hope”, after a year in which the country faced unprecedented threats in terms of terrorism in the north of the country and the Covid-19 pandemic.
After five months in a State of Emergency starting on April 1 and implementing contagion prevention measures, the country on September 7 entered into an indefinite State of Calamity, with the phased resumption of economic activities across the country.
