Mozambique: Digital education to reach 22,000 students in Cabo Delgado

The Mozambican health authorities on Friday reported that the number of recoveries from the Covid-19 respiratory disease is continuing to outstrip the number of new cases, leading to a reduction in the number of active cases of the disease.
According to a Friday press release from the Health Ministry, 1,453 people were declared to have made a full recovery from Covid-19 in the previous 24 hours (651 from Niassa, 199 from Niassa, 188 from Zambezia, 144 from Cabo Delgado, 139 from Tete and 132 from Maputo city). The total number of recoveries now stands at 198,303, which is 89.3 per cent of all those ever diagnosed with Covid-19 in Mozambique.
Since the start of the pandemic, 1,200,248 people have been tested for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 4,298 of them in the previous 24 hours. 3,755 of these tests yielded negative results, while 543 people tested positive for the virus. This brought the total number of positive cases diagnosed in Mozambique to 221,975.
Of the new cases identified on Friday, 293 were women and 250 were men. 82 were under 15 years of age. The provinces with the largest number of cases were Zambezia (168 – 30.9 per cent) and Maputo city (102 – 18.8 per cent). There were also 60 cases from Niassa, 42 from Inhambane, 40 from Maputo province, 36 from Sofala, 30 from Tete, 27 from Gaza, 25 from Nampula, nine from Manica and four from Cabo Delgado.
The positivity rate (the percentage of those tested found to be infected with the virus) rose slightly from 12.27 per cent on Thursday to 12.63 per cent on Friday.
Over the same 24 hour period, 18 Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital (12 in Maputo, three in Niassa, two in Inhambane and one in Matola), while 17 new cases were admitted (10 in Maputo, three in Gaza, two in Inhambane and two in Niassa).
The number of people under medical care in the Covid-19 treatment centres fell from 131 on Thursday to 127 on Friday. 63 of these patients (49.6 per cent) were in Maputo. There were also 10 patients in Nampula, nine in Gaza, nine in Manica, eight in Inhambane, eight in Niassa, six in Tete, five in Zambezia, five in Matola, three in Sofala and one in Cabo Delgado.
The Ministry reported a further three deaths from Covid-19, two women and one man, aged between 38 and 70. Two of the deaths occurred in Maputo and one in Manica. This brings the total Covid-19 death toll in Mozambique to 2,149.
The number of active cases of Covid-19 fell from 22,432 on Thursday to 21,519 on Friday. The geographical distribution of the active cases was as follows: Maputo province, 6,998 (32.5 per cent of the total); Maputo city, 5,715; Niassa, 1,563; Inhambane, 1,507; Gaza, 1,469; Zambezia, 1,466; Manica, 1,435; Cabo Delgado, 639; Tete, 585; Nampula, 106; and Sofala, 36.
The Ministry release also reported, that over the past 24 hours, a further 84,534 people had been vaccinated against Covid-10. This brings the total number of people fully vaccinated to 8,844,788. This is 58.2 per cent of the government’s target of vaccinating all adults over 18 years of age.
