The Mozambican Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) has received the largest share of support from international partners meant to help the country face the Covid-19 pandemic, the government announced yesterday.
The Mozambican state received US$448.5 million (€378.3 million) from the international community up until August 25 this year, according to information from the President of the Republic about the last state of emergency presented yesterday in parliament.
The executive has already used about half that amount, among its various ministries.
The largest share, US$98 million (€82.6 million) was channelled to the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), to address the revenue deficit caused by the slowdown in economic activity.
The Ministry of Health (MISAU) received US$79.5 million (€67 million), the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Action (MGCAS) US$20 million (€16.8 million euros) and the state-owned National Bank de Investimentos (BNI) received US$15 million (€12.6 million) to finance support programmes for companies affected by the pandemic.
The funds received are less than the amount requested by the Mozambican executive at the beginning of the pandemic, when the government asked partners for US$700 million (€590.5 million) in support.
Other information read out in parliament by Minister of Justice Helena Kida yesterday revealed that 2,054 people were tried for violation of the state of emergency, 50 of whom were sentenced to effective imprisonment, 92 to the payment of a fine, and 42 acquitted.
In the same period, the authorities dispersed more than 25,000 people gathering in public, 898 people were removed from buses for lack of a mask and 59 vehicles, 139 moto-taxis and 14 bicycles were seized.
The state of emergency in force between August 8 and September 6 was the country’s second, the first having been in effect from April 1 to July 29.
On September 7, an indefinite state of public calamity came into force.
