The Episcopal Conference of Mozambique (CEM) has announced through its Vocational Department that, after profound reflection by the Permanent Council in dialogue with the rectors of the major seminaries and their education teams, it has decided to cancel the 2020 academic year in all seminars in the country.
According to the bishops, the decision follows the exponential increase in Covid-19 cases in Mozambique, with community transmission of the disease in some areas, making the situation more worrying and endangering the lives of seminarians and teaching teams formative, among others.
Exponential increase in Covid-19 cases
In an interview with the Vatican News in Maputo, the Rector of the Major Theological Seminary Saint Pius X, in Maputo city, said that the decision was the right one for the time, with people’s health in danger and growing number of positive cases of Covid-19.
The return of seminaries to face-to-face classes would increase the risk of contamination, while, in the absence of face-to-face classes, they would improve conditions as outlined in the health protocols.
Bishops call for monitoring of young people
Considering that the educational process in the seminars goes beyond the merely academic, the CEM is calling upon the dioceses to provide close and continuous monitoring of young people.
Mozambique currently has a cumulative total of more than 6,000 Covid-19 cases, with close to 4,000 recovered and 44 deaths. The country is in a State of Public Disaster, declared by the President Filipe Nyusi.
