Mozambican authorities on Tuesday warned of the spread of fake news about cases of the new coronavirus in the country, reiterating that Mozambique remains disease free and that health services are reporting daily on the situation.
“Any information on the evolution of coronavirus in the country will be reported promptly through the usual communication channels,” a statement from the Maputo Central Hospital (HCM) issued yesterday reads.
HCM went public yesterday to refute a document purportedly bearing a provincial directorate stamp and alleging a case of contagion in the hospital which was posted on social media.
“HCM does not confirm this, and in fact denies any occurrence of the disease in the hospital, and reiterates that, to date, no case has been diagnosed in Mozambique,” the communique reads.
The clarification follows on another, ten days ago, on the voluntary confinement of four Chinese citizens in a hotel in Maputo, explaining that none were infected, nor were they under mandatory quarantine.
Screening of passengers from China, regardless of their nationality, started in Mozambique on 22 January.
According to the Ministry of Health, by Sunday, 468 passengers had been screened and advised to stay at home, voluntarily, for daily monitoring by health professionals.
Of these 468, a total of 310 have already completed the 14-day follow-up, with no symptoms recorded.
The death toll from the new coronavirus (Covid-19) in mainland China has now risen to 1,868, while 1,886 new infection cases have been reported, bringing the total to 72,436.
In addition to 1,868 dead in mainland China, there has been one casualty in the Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong, one in the Philippines, one in Japan, one in France and one in Taiwan.
Although around 30 countries have diagnosed cases of Covid-19, China accounts for nearly 99% of the global total infected.
