Mozambique may face a calamity if a significant part of the population continues to ignore coronavirus prevention measures.
So said health minister Armindo Tiago, who is concerned about the attitudes of those citizens defying State of Emergency regulations.
“We left a sporadic cases situation for one of foci of transmission, and then we will be in community transmission, and if we reach this stage, it will be a calamity. And that [community transmission stage] is what each of us must strive to avoid. And we can only avoid it if we comply fully with all the measures listed in the presidential decree on the prevention and control of Covid-19,” the health minister warned at the end of his monitoring visit to Cabo Delgado, the province with the greatest number of confirmed cases in the country so far.
The preventative measures that are being ignored by some citizens include hand washing, the use of masks and social distancing, considered in combination the best way to avoid community transmission.
“The fight against Covid-19 is not for the government alone, but for all of us. Even if only one person fails, we all fail,” ran the minister of health’s appeal.
