The Ministry of Health has confirmed that South Africa’s COVID-19 infections continue to rise. 38 additional cases were reported.
The rate of COVID-19 infections rose by 38 from 20 March 2020, to 240 on Saturday, 21 March, according to the Ministry of Health and the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD).
We confirm 38 new cases that tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, the causative pathogen for COVID-19. To date, SA has a total of 240 confirmed cases since the announcement of the first confirmed case by Minister of Health, @DrZweliMkhize , on 5 March 2020.

New confirmed COVID-19 cases
It was also confirmed that Eastern Cape recorded its first case of the coronavirus after a 28-year-old woman who travelled to Germany tested positive for the COVID-19 infection.
At the time of publishing, Gauteng still has the most confirmed cases, with 16 new cases recorded and currently at 125 cases; while the Western Cape has seen the biggest spike in recorded cases, which went up from 56 to 74.

On Saturday 21 March, global cases stood at 277 312 and 11 554 deaths. More than 91 000 people have recovered from the virus since the first cases were recorded in Wuhan, China.
