Even before President Nyusi’s declaration, leaders of the Islamic religion in Nampula were calling on their faithful not to travel to China. But the new measures coming into force might compromise religious services.
A large part of the population of the three provinces in the north of Mozambique embraces Islam, and Friday prayer brings many Muslims together in the region’s mosques.
The faithful pay their obeisances to God practically shoulder to shoulder, a practice which might need to be reconsidered as the coronavirus pandemic continues to spread throughout the world.
Even with no diagnosed cases in Mozambique yet, prevention is the watchword, and sermons in mosques are so far in line with the current message.
Islamic religious leaders say they are acting in strict accordance with the President of the Republic’s message and are advising the faithful to observe all preventative measures.
