The fourth patient to test positive for Covid-19 in Nampula province returned from neighbouring South Africa on 8 May and went to his home in Jangamo. Ten days later, he went to the Cumbana Health Centre in the same district with respiratory problems. Due to the severity of his condition, he was transferred to Inhambane Provincial Hospital.
His clinical picture saw him admitted to the Transitional Isolation Centre of the largest hospital in the province, and a coronavirus test sample was taken. The result confirming that the individual was infected returned 48 hours later.
The Inhambane Provincial Health Directorate’s Sonia Mahesso says the individual already had symptoms when he returned from South Africa, but only sought treatment once home.
Once Covid-19 was detected, the authorities immediately tried to trace the individual’s contacts. Among them are health technicians who attended him at the health units in Jangamo and Inhambane.
Altogether, 27 people were identified as contacts of the confirmed case, and are now undergoing mandatory quarantine. Samples have been collected from them for laboratory analysis.
The fourth Inhambane Covid-19 case remains in the Jangamo Isolation Centre with moderate to severe symptoms, but is showing signs of improvement.
The individual who first attended this patient and his family are in quarantine and have been tested for coronavirus. Sadly, this citizen, after fulfilling his home quarantine requirements, will have to answer in court for practicing medicine in Mozambique illegally.
