A person infected with the new coronavirus died in Mozambique, but due to other health problems other than the Covid-19 respiratory disease, said the national director of Public Health, Rosa Marlene on Tuesday (May 19).
The country has no official record of any deaths due to the pandemic. Today’s victim, a man aged between 40 and 50, had tested positive for Covid-19 on May 15 and today was admitted unconscious at a health unit in Palma, in Cabo Delgado, north of the country.
A few minutes after he was admitted, the death was recorded, added Rosa Marlene, speaking during the daily press conference to update data on the pandemic at the Ministry of Health in Maputo.
“He was complying with home isolation and had been asymptomatic all the way through. The clinical picture presented suggests that the cause of death was another pathology and not directly related to Covid-19”, said Rosa Marlene.
Rosa Marlene also said that Mozambique recorded, still over the last 24 hours, the first hospitalisation of a patient with Covid-19: a Mozambican man aged between 60 and 70 years old, diagnosed with the new coronavirus. He was hospitalised on Monday (May 18) in the city of Maputo.
“The patient is under observation for the final diagnosis”, said the national director of public health.
In the last 24 hours, Mozambique recorded yet another case of Covid-19, bringing the cumulative number of cases in the country to 146.
The new case concerns a foreign citizen, aged between 25 and 39, and results from the second tests carried out on workers who were quarantined in the construction site of the industrial complex for processing natural gas in Afungi, Cabo Delgado, one of the locations with highest concentration of cases in Mozambique.
“He has no symptoms and is in isolation at home, in the city of Maputo,” said Rosa Marlene.
From Monday to Tuesday, 265 tests were performed in Mozambique, of which 256 at the National Health Institute Laboratory, in Marracuene (Maputo province) and nine others in private health facilities.
Meanwhile, two more patients have recovered in the last 26 hours, bringing the cumulative total to 48.
