ExxonMobil has donated 6,700 masks, 165 litres of alcohol gel and more than 25,000 pairs of gloves to Mozambican health authorities to fight the new coronavirus in Mozambique, the multinational announced yesterday.
“Our intention is to be part of the response to the crisis, through direct support to our host communities in this time of need,” a communique quoting Jos Evens, director-general of ExxonMobil in Mozambique, reads.
The North American oil company, together with Italian company Eni, leads the LNG consortium in Area 4 of the Rovuma basin, off the coast of Cabo Delgado, in northern Mozambique.
Area 4 is operated by Mozambique Rovuma Venture (MRV), a ‘joint venture’ which holds a 70 percent interest in the concession contract, and is owned by ExxonMobil, Eni and CNPC (China).
Portuguese company Galp, KOGAS (South Korea) and the National Hydrocarbon Company (Mozambique) each hold 10% stakes.
At the beginning of April, ExxonMobil officially announced the postponement, without deadline, of the final investment decision for its natural gas megaproject in the area.
The postponement is due to a cut in 2020 capital expenditures by 30% and in operating expenses by 15% due to the fall in oil and oil products prices caused by excess supply and low demand resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic.
Globally, the Covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 165,000 lives and infected almost 2.5 million people in 193 countries and territories. More than 537,000 patients are considered fully recovered.
The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December in Wuhan, a city in central China.
