Mozambique: Businesses call for peace so that investment flows, TotalEnergies resumes LNG project ...
Eleven companies have closed in Niassa as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, at a cost of more than 150 jobs, mostly in the hospitality and tourism and construction and services sectors.
Speaking on the “Voz do Cidadão” radio programme on Thursday, Head of the Department of Labour and Social Security, Jorge Daniel, added that nine other companies had suspended activities, affecting a further 160 workers.
Daniel said the government, through the National Investment Bank, had opened credit lines and brought in fiscal and customs measures to support companies and minimise the negative impact of the new coronavirus in these sectors.
Executive secretary of OTM-Central Sindical in Niassa, Celeste Simão, regretted the dismissals, alleging that some companies were acting in bad faith when dismissing workers on the grounds of Covid-19.
Sources say the resumption of activities by some companies, in the scope of the relaxation of some coronavirus preventive measures, is fuelling expectations of an economic recovery.
The province of Niassa has more than 3,450 companies, employing more than 4,700 workers.
