The Mozambican health authorities on Wednesday reported a further eight new cases of the Covid-19 respiratory disease.
According to a Wednesday press release from the Ministry of Health, all eight were Mozambican citizens. Five were women and three were men. They ranged in age from eight to 68 years old. Three of the new cases were from Sofala, two were from Maputo city, and there was one each from Tete, Zambezia and Inhambane.
Since the start of the pandemic, 1,386,249 people have been tested in Mozambique for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 483 of them in the previous 24 hours. 475 of these tests yielded negative results, and the eight who tested positive raised the total number of positive cases diagnosed in Mozambique to 230,145.
The positivity rate (the percentage of those tested found to be carrying the coronavirus) fell from 1.69 per cent on Monday to 1.17 per cent on Tuesday, before rising slightly to 1.66 per cent on Wednesday.
One Covid-19 patient was discharged, and one new case was admitted, both in Maputo city. The number of patients undergoing medical care in the Covid-19 wards fell from nine on Tuesday to eight on Wednesday. Six of these patients were in Niassa, one was in Tete, and one was in Zambezia. None of them were in intensive care.
The Ministry reported one death from Covid-19 on Wednesday, a 52 year old man who died in Maputo city. The death toll in Mozambique from the disease has now risen to 2,222.
No recoveries were reported on Wednesday, and so the total number of recoveries from Covid-19 remains 227,819, which is 98.99 per cent of all cases of Covid-19 diagnosed in Mozambique.
The number of active cases of Covid-19 fell from 94 on Monday to 93 on Tuesday and then rose to 100 on Wednesday. The geographical breakdown of the active cases was as follows: Zambezia, 29; Cabo Delgado, 12; Nampula, 12; Maputo city, 11; Gaza, eight; Tete, seven; Manica, seven; Sofala, five; Niassa, four; Inhambane, three; and Maputo province, two.
The Ministry press release also reported that a further 611 people were vaccinated against Covid-19 on Wednesday. The total number fully vaccinated against the disease now stands at 14,689,409, which is 96.6 per cent of all citizens aged 18 and above.
