Cross-border traffic in Mozambique was down 93% last week as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Approximately 8,000 travellers entered and left Mozambique, against just over 106,000 in the same period last year.
Mozambique has enacted a state of emergency and adopted multiple measures to prevent and contain the spread of the new coronavirus.
Among these are restrictions on the entry and exit of people across national borders. With 29 crossings closed, only 27 border posts remain active. Of these, Ressano Garcia is the busiest.
Last week, 714 foreign citizens of different nationalities left Mozambique via Mavalane International Airport [Maputo] on a special [repatriation] flight, scheduled flights having been suspended by several countries as a way to contain the spread of Covid-19.
