The global crisis caused by the new coronavirus is not affecting cargo handling projections at the Port of Beira, in Sofala province, with the company set to handle approximately two and a half million tons of cargo this year.
The guarantee was given by the CEO of Cornelder Mozambique, the concessionaire for the port of Beira, Jan de Vries, who said that, contrary to what might be expected, there was an increase in the flow of containerised cargo.
The closure of borders in some countries in the region, due to the outbreak of the pandemic, was leading to Beira being seen as an alternative.
De Vries said dozens of ships were arriving daily, mostly containing food products and fertilisers bound for hinterland countries.
“Ships and trucks are coming. We are maintaining operating conditions – it is important that the work does not stop,” he said.
The CEO of Cornelder Moçambique told our reporter that more than 30 disinfection stations had been set up in the port as part of the fight against the coronavirus.
