The mayor of Boane in Maputo province said on Friday that Covid-19 counter-measures had already cost the municipality 40 million meticais.
Despite efforts to slow the spread of the disease, ‘O País’ found some residents failing to comply with Covid-19 prevention measures, going out into the streets without masks, and sending their children to the market mask-less.
“We are concerned about this situation,” Mayor Jacinto Loureiro said. “so we are tightening up inspection measures in markets and other public spaces, using the Municipal Police. if necessary, we will use the Protection Police to hold offenders accountable,” the mayor said, before going on to enumerate how the 40 million meticais had been spent.
“We created new spaces to accommodate all salespeople in inappropriate places, like the new shopping centre with 600 stores which will house 1,000 salespeople. We will have there the sale of vegetables, fruit and cereals, but reorganised so that social distancing is possible and we have no more cases of contamination. As I speak (Friday noon) we have 27 positive cases, and we don’t want our reputation to suffer,” Loureiro said.
A Covid-19 awareness campaign, implemented by the municipality in partnership with Mozal, was underway. “Funding is coming not only from the city, but also from other partners that have helped us in this regard. For example, the partnership with Mozal aims to create a more aggressive communication approach, to see if we can reduce the number of cases,” he concluded.
