The organisation of the Correntes d’Escritas literary festival in Portugal created “a monitoring group”, after confirming that Chilean writer Luis Sepúlveda, who attended the event, is infected with the new coronavirus. The announcement was made on Sunday.
In a statement, the Municipality of Póvoa de Varzim (Porto), which organises the festival, explains that “a monitoring group has been set up” and that it that “will follow all the recommendations” of the Directorate-General for Health.
The announcement came after it has been confirmed that Luis Sepúlveda, one of the festival’s guests, is infected with the new coronavirus and hospitalised in Oviedo, Spain.
Spanish newspaper “La Voz de Asturias” reported on Saturday that the 70-year-old writer is the first confirmed case in the Asturias region of Spain and is in isolation at the Central University Hospital of Asturias in Oviedo.
According to the publication, the writer and his wife were at the Correntes d’Escritas festival between February 18 and 23, Sepulveda’s first symptoms began on the 25th, and he sought medical help two days later. His wife is also in isolation at that health facility, and it has not yet been confirmed whether or not she is infected.
The 21st Correntes d’Escritas festival took place from February 19 to 23 with the participation of almost a hundred authors of Iberian expression, of 14 nationalities, Mozambique included, who participated in various activities, such as debates and meetings with the public.
According to the festival’s organisation, the monitoring group is “in direct contact with the responsible entities of local, regional and national health,” referring “all communication on this subject” to the [Portuguese] Directorate-General for Health.
Lusa News Agency unsuccessfully tried to obtain further clarification from the organisation of the literary event.
The Covid-19 outbreak, detected in December in China and which can cause respiratory infections such as pneumonia, caused nearly 3,000 deaths and infected more than 86,000 people, according to data from the World Health Organisation.
Of the infected people, more than 39,000 recovered.
On Saturday, the Directorate-General for Health (DGS) revealed that Portugal has today had 70 suspected cases of infection with the new coronavirus (Covid-19), of which 67 were negative and the remaining three are awaiting laboratory results.
According to the DGS epidemiological bulletin on Covid-19, Portugal had not registered, at 6 pm on Saturday, any cases of infection.

The bulletin only mentions the cases registered in the country, excluding the two known cases of Portuguese people infected by the new coronavirus hospitalised in Japan.
Of these two Portuguese, Adriano Maranhão, the first to be infected with the new coronavirus, this Sunday was discharged from hospital in Japan, after negative results in the analyses, according to his wife, Emmanuelle Maranhão.
