Beira Central Hospital (HCB) and the Hospital da Mulher 24 de Julho will start performing mass testing for patients with symptoms of the novel coronavirus, Noticias reports.
The measure was announced on Tuesday by the director of the Provincial Health Services in Sofala, Priscila Filimone, during this year’s first session of the Public Health Emergency Operating Committee.

The new provision will make it possible to obtain test results in just 30 minutes, facilitating better management of clinical cases and assistance to patients in critical, moderate and mild conditions.
Filimone also revealed that, after these two hospitals, rapid mass testing would be introduced to urban health centres in Ponta-Gêa, Munhava and Chingussura.
The introduction of rapid mass testing aims to alleviate pressure on the National Institute of Health (INS) and Community of Sant’Egidio laboratories in the city. These two labs perform between 350 and 400 tests a day, of which about 50% have been turning out positive.

The INS has already started training staff for the initiative. Rapid mass testing will also be rolled out to other public and private institutions, which can request the INS to train their staff. This, it is hoped, will expand capacity for Covid-19 testing among civil servants and other agents of the state, as well as workers in the private sector.
