Mpox: Mozambican authorities report 11 suspected cases, only three confirmed cases

The Mozambican health authorities on Thursday reported a further 24 cases of the Covid-19 respiratory disease – the same number as reported on Wednesday.
According to a Thursday press release from the Ministry of Health, since the start of the pandemic, 1,255,458 people have been tested for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 1,796 of them in the previous 24 hours.
1,772 of these tests yielded negative results. The 24 positive results brought the total number of Covid-19 cases diagnosed in Mozambique to 224,815.
Of the new cases diagnosed on Thursday, 16 were women and eight were men. 16 of the cases (67 per cent) came from Maputo city. There were also three cases from Maputo province, two from Sofala, and one each from Tete, Zambezia and Inhambane. No positive cases were reported from the other five provinces.
The positivity rate (the percentage of people tested found to be infected with the virus) fell slightly, from 1.41 per cent on Wednesday to 1.34 per cent on Thursday.
Over the same 24 hour period, six Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital (two each in Maputo, Nampula and Manica) and four new cases were admitted (two in Maputo, one in Gaza and one in Inhambane).
The number of people under medical care in the Covid-19 wards fell from 18 on Wednesday to 16 on Thursday, three of whom were receiving supplementary oxygen. 11 of these patients (68.8 per cent) were in Maputo, three were in Gaza, one was in Inhambane and one was in Zambezia. No Covid-19 patients were hospitalised in the other seven provinces.
The Ministry release also reported that in the same period, a further 135 people made a full recovery from Covid-19 (79 in Maputo province, 21 in Maputo city, 20 in Cabo Delgado and 15 in Tete). This brought the total number of recoveries to 218,829, which was 97.3 per cent of all those ever diagnosed with Covid-19 in Mozambique.
The number of active cases of Covid-19 fell from 3,904 on Wednesday to 3,793 on Thursday. The geographical distribution of the active cases was as follows: Maputo city, 3,313 (87.3 per cent of the total); Niassa, 146; Cabo Delgado, 77; Maputo province, 69; Tete, 52; Nampula, 38; Gaza, 34; Zambezia, 27; Manica, 21; Sofala, 11; and Inhambane, five.
The Ministry also reported that, over the previous 24 hours, a further 50,662 people were vaccinated against Covid-19. The number of people fully vaccinated against the disease has now reached 10,406,212, which is 68.4 per cent of all citizens aged 18 and above.
