The Mozambican health authorities on Tuesday reported a further 15 deaths from the Covid-19 respiratory disease, and 873 new cases.
According to a Ministry of Health press release, 12 of the latest victims were men and three were women. All were Mozambicans, and their ages varied from five to 87. Eleven of the deaths occurred in Maputo, two in Sofala, one in Zambezia and one in Cabo Delgado. 13 of the deaths were declared on Monday, one on Sunday and one on Tuesday.
The total Covid-19 death toll in Mozambique is now 480. Then great majority – 372 (77.5 per cent) – occurred in Maputo city. In the first nine days of February there were 88 deaths – or almost ten a day.
Since the start of the pandemic, 367,994 people have been tested for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 3,124 of them in the previous 24 hours. Of the samples tested, 872 were from Maputo city, 545 from Inhambane, 522 from Tete, 381 from Gaza, 250 from Sofala, 166 from Maputo province, 130 from Manica, 122 from Nampula, 79 from Zambezia and 57 from Cabo Delgado. No tests were reported from Niassa,
2,251 of the tests gave negative results, and 873 people tested positive for the coronavirus. This brings the total number of Covid-19 cases diagnosed in Mozambique to 45,785. The positivity rate (the proportion of those tested found to be carrying the virus) on Tuesday was 27.9 per cent. This compares with 17 per cent on Monday, 25.6 per cent on Sunday, 36.4 per cent on Saturday and 30.6 per cent on Friday. The average positivity rate over the past week is 30.4 per cent.
Of the cases reported on Tuesday, 863 are known to be Mozambicans, eight are foreigners (but the Ministry did not reveal their nationality). The nationality of the remaining two has yet to be ascertained.
466 of the new cases are men or boys, and 407 are women or girls. 54 are children under the age of 15 and 46 are over 65 years old. No age information was available for 21 cases.
There were 248 cases from Maputo city and 77 from Maputo province. Thus Maputo city and province accounted for 37.2 per cent of the new cases. But there were also 183 cases from Inhambane, 116 from Tete, 104 from Sofala, 85 from Gaza, 41 from Cabo Delgado, 13 from Zambezia and six from Nampula.
The Ministry release said that, over the same 24 hour period, 38 Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital (22 in Maputo, five in Tete, four in Zambezia, three in Cabo Delgado, two in Inhambane and two in Matola), but 47 new cases were admitted (35 in Maputo, six in Inhambane, five in Cabo Delgado, and one in Tete).
As of Tuesday, there were 312 people in the Covid-19 wards – this slight decline from Monday’s figure of 316 is due to the deaths reported on Tuesday. The great majority of the patients – 254 (81.4 per cent) – are in Maputo. There are also 14 in Sofala, 12 in Matola, 10 in Zambezia, nine in Inhambane, five in Tete, three in Cabo Delgado, two in Niassa, two in Gaza, and one in Manica. Nampula is currently the only province where no Covid-19 patients are hospitalised.
The Ministry also reported that 376 more people have made a full recovery from Covid-19 (237 in Manica, 68 in Maputo province, 59 in Zambezia, and 13 in Maputo city). This brings the total number of recoveries to 27,814, which is 60.7 per cent of all those diagnosed with the coronavirus in Mozambique.
Since the number of new cases continues to outstrip the number of recoveries, the number of active cases inevitably rises and now stands at 17,487 (up from 17,005 on Monday). The geographical distribution of the active cases is as follows: Maputo city, 9,495 (54.3 per cent of the total); Maputo province, 2,462; Sofala, 1,502; Gaza, 1,320; Inhambane, 588; Cabo Delgado, 567; Niassa, 531; Nampula, 329; Manica, 277; Tete, 266; and Zambezia, 150.
