The Mozambican health authorities on Tuesday reported a further 14 cases of the Covid-19 respiratory disease, bringing the total number of Covid-19 cases diagnosed in the country to 151,316.
According to a Tuesday press release from the Ministry of Health, since the start of the pandemic, 944,063 people have been tested for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 1,155 of them in the previous 24 hours.
1,141 of the tests gave negative results, while 14 people tested positive for the virus. 11 of the new cases were women and three were men. Four cases were diagnosed in Maputo city, three in Maputo province, two in Niassa, and one each in Nampula, Zambezia, Tete, Inhambane and Gaza.
The positivity rate (the percentage of people tested found to be carrying the virus) on Tuesday was 1.2 per cent. This compares with 2.5 per cent on Monday, 0.5 per cent on Sunday and 1.3 per cent on Saturday.
Over the same 24 hour period, one Covid-19 patient was discharged from hospital (in Nampula), and two new cases were admitted, both in Maputo, The number of people under medical care in the Covid-19 treatment facilities was eight, the same as on Monday, and all of them were in Maputo.
The Ministry release said that on Tuesday 37 people were declared fully recovered from Covid-19, all of them in the northern province of Cabo Delgado. The total number of recoveries now stands at 149,248, or 98.6 per cent of all those ever diagnosed with Covid-19 in Mozambique.
The Ministry reported one more Covid-19 death. This victim was a 36 year old Mozambican man living in Zambezia. This brings the total Covid-19 death toll in Mozambique to 1.932.
The number of active Covid-19 cases fell from 156 on Monday to 132 on Tuesday. The geographical distribution of the positive cases was as follows: Maputo city, 46; Cabo Delgado, 26; Niassa, 15; Inhambane, nine; Manica, eight; Maputo province, seven; Nampula seven; Zambezia, six; Gaza, six, and Tete, two. Sofala remained the only province without any active Covid-19 cases.
Over the previous 24 hours, 222,821 people received their first Covid-19 vaccination. Since vaccination began, on 8 March, 2,323,387 people have been fully vaccinated, and 3,905,774 have received at least one dose of the vaccine.
The third phase of the national vaccination campaign is due to end on Wednesday. The Health Ministry urged all those covered by this phase who have not yet received the vaccine to head immediately for the vaccination posts.
The target groups in this phase are anyone aged between 30 and 49 in urban areas who has not yet been vaccinated, and individuals in the rural areas aged 50 and above.
