Mozambique: Cholera outbreak declared again in Moma district

According to the Mozambican health authorities, on Monday 12 further deaths from the Covid-19 respiratory disease were reported, and 257 new cases.
Speaking at a Maputo press conference, the Deputy National Director of Public Health, Benigna Matsinhe, said the latest victims were eight men and four women, aged between 58 and 81. Eleven were Mozambican nationals and the 12th was a foreigner (whose nationality was not revealed). 11 of the deaths occurred in Maputo city and one in Matola.
The total number of Covid-19 deaths in Mozambique has now risen to 653. The majority of these – 515 (78.9 per cent) – died in Maputo city.
Since the start of the pandemic, 424,885 people have been tested for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 1,547 of them in the previous 24 hours. Of the samples tested, 512 were from Maputo province, 507 from Inhambane, 191 from Nampula, 109 from Sofala, 98 from Maputo city, 60 from Gaza, 54 from Zambezia, 11 from Tete, three from Niassa and two from Manica. No tests were reported from Cabo Delgado,
1,290 of the tests gave negative results and 257 people tested positive for the coronavirus. This brought the number of cases of the disease diagnosed in Mozambique to 59,607.
254 of the cases reported on Monday were Mozambicans, and three were foreigners (Matsinhe did not give their nationalities). 129 were men or boys and 128 were women or girls. 23 were children under the age of 15, and 17 were more than 65 years old. For 26 cases, no age information was available.
The positivity rate (the proportion of those tested found to be carrying the virus) was 16.6 per cent – the lowest rate recorded since 6 January.
137 of the new cases were from Maputo province – 53 per cent of the total. There were also 64 cases from Inhambane, 23 from Maputo city, 15 from Nampula, 10 from Zambezia, five from Gaza, two from Sofala, and one from Tete. None of those tested in Niassa or Manica were positive.
Matsinhe reported that, over the same 24 hour period, 16 Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital (eight in Maputo, six in Tete, one in Cabo Delgado and one in Sofala), but 16 new cases were admitted (11 in Maputo and five in Tete).
As of Monday, there were 205 people under medical care in the Covid-19 wards (down from 217 on Sunday). The great majority – 144 (70.2 per cent) – were in Maputo. There were also 16 patients in Matola, 11 in Nampula, 10 in Sofala, nine in Zambezia, six in Tete, three in Niassa, two in Cabo Delgado, two in Inhambane, one in Manica and one in Gaza.
Matsinhe said that 141 of the patients are men and 64 are women. 89 (43.4 per cent) are 60 or more years old and 55 (26.8 per cent) are in the 45-59 year age bracket.
Matsinhe described the clinical condition of 102 of the patients as “moderate”. 92 are seriously ill and 11 are in a critical state. 157 are being submitted to oxygen therapy, and 11 are on ventilators.
She also announced that a further 317 people have made a full recovery from Covid-19 (140 in Inhambane, 100 in Sofala, 94 in Manica and three in Zambezia). This brings the total number of recoveries to 41,413, which is 69.5 per cent of all those diagnosed in Mozambique with Covid-19.
There were, by Monday, 17,537 active cases of Covid-19 in the country (down from 17,609 on Sunday). Their geographical distribution is as follows: Maputo city, 10.797 (61.6 per cent of the total); Maputo province, 2,346; Sofala, 1,337; Cabo Delgado, 757; Inhambane, 482; Niassa, 469; Nampula, 420; Zambezia, 397; Tete, 350; Manica, 95; and Gaza 87.
