The Judicial Court of the City of Maputo on Thursday (New Year’s Eve) ordered the seizure of assets of the historical Minerva bookshop in the central business district of the Mozambican capital, a source close to the institution told Lusa.
The decision is a consequence of the almost one million meticais (€10,000) that Minerva owes a supplier and that should have been paid in the last six months, the source said, adding that the bookstore’s financial situation was “not good at all”.
As a result, the assets of Mozambique’s oldest bookstore’s were seized under the eyes of those passing by the recently opened premises on Avenida 25 de Setembro.
The facilities, which include a bookstore and a restaurant, were opened in November 2019, and sell books and computer equipment, as well as serving meals.
Founded on April 14, 1908, Minerva Central, a printer, bookstore, stationery and computer company, is a Maputo icon, and organised its first book fair in 1935.
