The President of the Mozambique Tax Authority Amelia Nakhare says that corruption, particularly in the institution she runs, discourages business development.
Speaking on Friday in Boane district, Maputo province, during the closing ceremony of the first course of military basic education of Tax Authority staff, Amelia Nakhare also said that in addition to harming the state, the phenomenon is reducing the country’s competitiveness and perpetuating poverty.
“It is worth noting that the money that passes through our hands is not our property, but that it belongs to the nearly 27 million Mozambicans who contribute with the sacrifice of their work to the payment of taxes, as a savings mechanism of each in favour of the common good, in the struggle for a Mozambique free of poverty, and so we shout out loud: No to corruption!” she said.
About 90 employees of the Tax Authority of Mozambique, among them senior managers and technicians from all over the country, are undergoing military preparedness training.
According to Nakhare, employees who have completed the training are better able to understand and contribute with concrete actions to combating corruption, tax fraud and evasion and smuggling.
“The training is in line with our goal of zero tolerance for all tax and customs crimes, which undermine state revenue collection,” she said.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Director General of Customs, Paulino Dallas, said that the training was “relevant because we have a vast expanse of Mozambique in need of supervision”.
According to Dallas, the physical and mental preparation of the institution’s staff will allow greater enforcement capacity.
Amido Abdala, speaking on behalf of the finalists, said that the training gave trainees the opportunity to fulfill their sense of patriotic duty.
“We are aware of the challenges facing the institution, which tend to increase from year to year. So we renew our commitment to do everything possible to leverage revenue collection levels and combat vigorously any attempt at tax fraud or evasion,” Abdala said.
