The Ministry of Health (MISAU) has triggered the highest national alert in the face of coronavirus Covid-19 cases being confirmed in neighbouring South Africa, where seven cases of the disease have already been reported.
Speaking yesterday in Maputo at the opening of a series of lectures on preventive measures, Minister of Health Armindo Tiago reiterated that Mozambique was prepared to respond to a possible outbreak of the disease, stressing the importance of not panicking.

“We activated the highest alert and we are making every effort to ensure that Mozambican society is prepared, but calmly, in order to allow us to deal with the situation, as we have done in the past in similar conditions,” he said.
Armindo Tiago pointed to the establishment and observance of preventive measures as the bst way to prevent the spread of any disease.
As part of strategies to prevent the spread of the virus, the Road Transport Cooperative in Maputo announced that it would distribute masks to drivers and ticket collectors.
Radio Mozambique quoted association president António Tsucana as saying that discussions with the health sector as to the type of mask to be used were underway.
“In the next few days, we are going to introduce masks. This is one of the ways we have come up with to reduce the risk of spreading the disease, since buses are used by many people,” he said.
According to the representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Mozambique, Djamila Cabral, it is important to share only accurate information about the coronavirus, since the disease in fact becomes a greater threat as a result of misinformation.
“The coronavirus is not the only threat. We have another major threat: misinformation, the transmission of false and incorrect information, as well as the creation of panic and fear,” the WHO representative warned.
