Mozambique: Health Ministry hopes to vaccinate 18 million children against polio

One more person has died of Covid-19 in Mozambique, bringing the total number of deaths to 17, since March this year. The victim was 22 years old and died on Thursday, August 6th, in Chimoio, Manica province,
According to the Ministry of Health, the young man, a Mozambican national, was admitted to the Provincial Hospital of Chimoio on the 6th of August, at around 1:00 a.m, “with a severe respiratory illness”. Death was declared soon after, at around 4:45 a.m.. “A sample was taken for the Covid-19 test at the time of his admission [to hospital] and the positive result was confirmed on Monday, [August 10th],” adds the MISAU brief issued today [ Tuesday, August 11].
As for newly diagnosed COVID-19 cases in the country, Mozambique reported this Tuesday another 70 , bringing the cumulative number to “2,481, of which 2,294 are local transmissions and 187 imported cases”.
Of the total cases announced today, 69 are Mozambican nationals and one is Zambian.
The 70 new cases are distributed geographically as follows: , 23 are from the city of Maputo – which records community transmission -, 18 are from the province of Maputo and 21 are from Gaza province.
All the cases reported today, including two children under the age of 5, are in residential isolation and, at the moment, the process of identifying their contacts is underway, the statement said.
Health authorities also indicate that there are 16 people hospitalised.
According to MISAU, 910 patients have completely recovered from Covid-19 in Mozambique.
Of the active cases in Mozambique, the city of Maputo, the country’s capital, has the highest number, with 532 infections, followed by Maputo province, with 348 cases.
