Mozambique yesterday reported its ninth death from Covid-19, on a day when the authorities registered 21 more cases of infection with the new coronavirus, the Ministry of Health announced.
The victim, 54, entered Quelimane General Hospital in Zambézia province on July 2 and died the following day, Director of Public Health Rosa Marlene revealed.
The victim’s diagnosis was not obtained until Tuesday, almost a week after the death.
“The sample for the test for the new coronavirus was collected on the day of hospitalisation and the positive result came out on the 7th. The death occurred on the day after hospitalisation,” said Rosa Marlene.
On Thursday (July 9), Mozambique registered another 21 coronavirus infections, bringing the total to 1,092.
“The new cases are of citizens of Mozambican nationality and result from our active surveillance and tracking of contacts of positive cases already announced,” Marlene said.
Of the total cases recorded in Mozambique, 1,007 are locally transmitted and 85 are imported, with 340 people reported to be recovered, the authorities said.
The country has 741 active cases, of whom five are hospitalised.
The provinces of Nampula and Cabo Delgado, in northern Mozambique, have the highest number of infections, with 247 and 183 cases respectively, followed by the province and city of Maputo, with 77 and 106 cases respectively.
The remaining provinces have less than 30 cases between them.
Since the announcement of the first case of Covid-19 in Mozambique, on March 22, the country has screened more than 1 million people and tested 36,698 suspected cases.
Those suspected of infection and placed under home quarantine total 20,908, and 2,302 continue to be monitored by health authorities.
The Covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 549,000 lives and infected more than 12 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.
In Africa, there are 12,206 confirmed deaths in more than 522,000 infected in 54 countries, according to the most recent statistics on the pandemic in that continent.
Among Portuguese-speaking African countries, Equatorial Guinea leads in number of infections and deaths (3,071 cases and 51 deaths), followed by Guinea-Bissau (1,790 cases and 25 deaths), Cape Verde (1,542 cases and 18 deaths), Mozambique (1,092 cases and nine deaths), São Tomé and Príncipe (724 cases and 13 deaths) and Angola (396 infected and 22 deaths).
