The number of deaths caused by covid-19 in Africa is at 744 and 13,686 cases have been reported in 52 countries, according to the most recent update of the pandemic data in the continent, issued this morning at 9 a.m. EAT ( 8 a.m. CAT].
According to the bulletin of the African Union’s Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC Africa), in the last 24 hours, the number of registered deaths has risen from 693 to 744, while infections have increased from 12,973 to 13,686.
CDC Africa also records 2,283 recovered patients after infection.

The pandemic affects 52 of Africa’s 55 countries and territories, with four countries – South Africa, Algeria, Egypt and Morocco – concentrating more than half of the infections and deaths associated with the new coronavirus.
South Africa has the highest number of confirmed cases (2,028), with 25 deaths, but the highest number of fatalities is recorded in Algeria (275), with 1,825 infected.
Egypt has 1,939 infected and 146 dead, while Morocco has 1,545 cases and 111 fatalities.
Only Lesotho, Comoros and Western Sahara have no reported cases.
All Portuguese-speaking African countries report cases of the disease, with Guinea-Bissau being the most affected, accounting for 39 people infected with the new coronavirus.
Angola has 19 confirmed cases of covid-19 and two deaths.
According to the CDC report, Mozambique has 2o reported cases of infection with the new coronavirus (although one new case has just been reported today, April 12, by the National Institute of Health] and Cape Verde has a total of eight cases of infection since the beginning of the pandemic, including one dead. On Thursday, Cape Verdean authorities announced that 12 Cape Verdean citizens abroad died of the disease.
São Tomé and Príncipe, the last Portuguese-speaking African country to detect the disease in its territory, has four confirmed cases.
In Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), 18 positive cases of infection are confirmed.
The new coronavirus, responsible for the pandemic of covid-19, has already caused more than 107 thousand deaths and infected more than 1.7 million people in 193 countries and territories.
Of the cases of infection, almost 345 thousand are considered cured.
After emerging in China in December, the outbreak spread across the world, prompting the World Health Organisation (WHO) to declare a pandemic situation.
