Mozambique’s cooperation partners are calling for disaggregation of statistical data by gender and social condition in order to respond positively to the challenges faced by people with disabilities in the country.
This assertion was expressed in Maputo on Tuesday (20), by the ambassador of the United States of America, Peter Vrooman, to Mozambique at a Conference on Disability and Human Rights, an event organized by the Mozambican Forum of Associations of People with Disabilities (FAMOD).
“The main problem here in Mozambique is that data is not disaggregated. Disaggregation of data into gender, social condition and age is an urgent issue because it will allow us to know exactly who are the marginalized and their needs to improve their lives”, he said.
According to the source, statistics should be detailed enough and made available to enable mobilization of accurate responses to the problems experienced by people with disabilities.
“Donors and civil society need this information. With accurate data, we will be able to design the right strategies. It starts with data and then we will bring in actions. With these steps, it will be possible to have a better perception of the situation of people with disability, favouring a better social inclusion”, stressed the diplomat.
For his part, the representative of the Norwegian Embassy, Gilberto Norte, said that there is an urgent need for more flexible coordination between the government and civil society for the approval of instruments to address the problems faced by people living with disabilities in the country.
“It is difficult to keep the projects in a sustainable way when there are no adequate instruments”, Norte said, adding that ongoing projects should be designed to make people aware of the conditions of people with disabilities for better social inclusion.
The European Union representative said that it is also urgent experts be involved to monitor public finances in projects involving the disabled people in the country.
“We should monitor public finances in programs involving disabled people. Our projects for education, digital transmission to help people in the northern regions of the country always include people with disabilities. It is important to implement programs that do not ignore those in need”, the diplomat said.
Participants of the two-day conference analyzed the current scenario on the rights of people with disabilities, 10 years after it was rectified by the Mozambican government, of the United Nations Convention on People with Disabilities.
According to National Disability Area Plan (2012-2019), in Mozambique there are about 475.011 disabled people, corresponding to 2% of the total population estimated at 30 million people.
