Two Mozambicans convicted in Mauritius will serve the remainder of their prison sentences in Mozambique, Minister of Justice, Constitutional and Religious Affairs Helena Khida has announced.
The same would apply to those convicted in Vietnam, although there are not thought to be any Mozambicans currently incarcerated there. Convicts are expected to serve their sentences in their country of origin.
Bilateral agreements applying to Mozambicans convicted in Mauritius and Vietnam require authorisation from the Assembly of the Republic.
The government is aware of two Mozambicans in prison in Mauritius but has no figures for Vietnam, saying it will look into the matter.
“We have two cases of Mozambicans in Mauritius. In the case of Vietnam, we will have a look to see if we have any. Probably, we do not. The most important thing is to predict the future. As you may know, laws are made for the future,” Minister Helena Khida said.
The implementation of the agreements was dependent on ratification in the Assembly of the Republic, which on Wednesday definitively and by consensus approved the Agreements on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons between the Government of the Republic of Mozambique and the Republics of Mauritius and Vietnam.
