Mozambique: Mondlane acknowledges "less correct decisions"
The Swiss ambassador to Mozambique, Mirko Manzoni, who chairs the contact group between the Government and the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), yesterday welcomed the understanding reached between the head of state and the interim leader of the opposition.

Mirko Manzoni congratulated the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, and the coordinator of the Renamo Political Commission, Ossufo Momade, “for placing the interests of Mozambicans first in the achievement of peace, as evidenced by their consensus on military matters ” he said in a statement.
“The meeting held in Beira on Wednesday, and the decision to maintain the spirit of dialogue already expressed by Renamo’s former President, Afonso Dhlakama, demonstrated their commitment to achieve an effective and sustainable peace in the country” .
“The rapprochement between the two leaders clearly shows the political courage to complete the process,” reads the communique pointing out that, for its part, Switzerland “confirms its commitment to continue supporting the peace process”.

The former Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama died on the 3rd of May due to health complications at a time when he had already negotiated with Nyusi to decentralise power, but left the military dossier closed.
In June the Liberation Front of Mozambique (Frelimo), the ruling party and Nyusi’s presidency made the approval of electoral legislation dependent on the progress of the demilitarisation of Renamo.
The meeting on Wednesday could have unlocked the impasse in parliament and lead to the approval of the electoral legislation following the constitutional amendment. This may enable local elections to be held on October 10.
