Mozambique: Mpox cases in Niassa rise
Citizens in Quelimane, Zambezia province, are full of praise for a Ministry of Health initiative aimed at creating a human organ and tissues transplant institute in the country.
Officials and professionals attending a public consultation in Quelimane on Monday believe it could save the lives of many people in need of organ transplants for their survival.
“We welcome [the initiative]. We have to pass this information on to others so that they realise that transplantation is a very necessary process. Transplants should take place in Mozambique in future because at present everything has to be done outside the country, and a lot of Mozambicans die of diseases that require organ transplants,” respondents say.
The Health Ministry will submit a draft law on organ and human tissue transplantation to Parliament for consideration this year.
An advisor to the Minister of Health said that public consultation to assess the sensitivity of various segments of Mozambican society on the issue was vital for the law to succeed.
Mozambican doctor Américo Hassane said that if the idea was implemented, the country would perform kidney and cornea transplants for the first time. Hassane said ideally transplants would be free and provided by a public entity, so as to guarantee access for the disadvantaged.
The Minister of Health advisor also noted that a transplant facility could also support the renal hemodialysis service provided so far only in Maputo.
